Tattoos and fried honey balls

Today I went to enjoy Greek Day on Broadway between Macdonald and Blenheim. Highlights:

  • Tons of people enjoying the festival despite the cool and cloudy weather!
  • Chicken souvlaki fresh off the grill mmmmm...
  • Lively Greek/Greek-influenced music and dance + belly dancing in front of Chai/East is East
  • Shine, my favourite store in that area, had a one day 20% off everything sale AND free reusable waterproof bags that were also really colourful and whimsical! I got a pair of super bright aqua tights, hehe.
  • Um, I got a "tat" (temporary airbrushed tattoo) at the West Coast Tattoos tent. Deciding on a design and then lining up took forever, but so worth it.

Did you ladies go? Share the highlights of YOUR weekend! :D

twitter

I almost feel like we might want to consider maybe using Twitter rather than cobuli...

Am wavering between "pssh no need, we text each other enough" and "but it would be cool... and we could do twitpics aka sharing pictures"

perhaps the high saturation of techie characters and discourse at this conference is getting to me :D

(hurrah for microblogging)

at a blogging workshop

Currently at a blogging workshop at the 2009 Canadian E-Learning Conference! (Lillooet Room in the Chapman Learning Commons)

Going through the basics of starting a blog, writing a new post, etc. A bit slow, but looking forward to some meatier stuff in the latter half.

Less Talk, More Walk

CoBuLi was born out of necessity - a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel - during those much hated but undoubtedly character-building extended final exam study sessions. Four friends would publicly compile and share things "to do", "MUST do", "I will", "I wish", "I want"... A great idea, and one we couldn't wait to get started on, "once exams are over".

Famous last words. Was it simply a procrastination tool? Defense would plead no, but the sad truth points to yes. A resounding yes. Because it's two whole months later, and not only have we not done all the fun things brainstormed while textbooks lay strewn haphazardly about, we haven't even put those items up in the first place. I take that back. I haven't. Sad. And changing -- now.

My new approach is "less talk, more walk". There will always be something urgent taking up your time, pushing back all those things you want to do. I doubt there exists an absolute opportune time where the universe aligns and all signs point to go. Yet I am guilty, as I'm sure many of us are, of putting things off until that fabled ideal reveals itself.

So I discard "there will come a time when I'll be able to" and replace it with "I will make the time to". Starting with this post. Thank you to those providing encouraging nudges in the right direction. I've jumped in.

Heart

I get ridiculously excited when I hang out with you guys. Things we should do:

-horseback riding
-picnic in the park
-ride a bike!
-fly a kite
-Capilano Suspension Bridge

Also, I LOVE the idea of a professional page. I'm thinking of making a blog (like Corker:)) and attaching that link to my emails:) Internet tattoos are the coooooooolest.

Angeli's comment:
1. BOO why can't i post comments the normal way?
2. YAY great idea with attaching the link to your email! I may do that for LinkedIn.

LinkedIn - Facebook for Grown-ups?

New online tools and social networks intrigue me, but I seldom get any meaningful use out of it, because it takes too much effort to maintain multiple accounts on this website or that web service...

I've found myself visiting some friends' profiles on a social networking platform called LinkedIn, which is basically a network for professionals. You can include your education, job history, accomplishments, and career objectives. Now I never really saw it as a relevant tool for my own purposes until recently. But I think I've realized how we, as soon-to-be-graduating university students, can make good use of LinkedIn!

Some context: I'm part of Arts Tri-Mentoring, and my mentor set up a meeting with the Director of UBC Continuing Studies at UBC Robson Square. Going into the meeting, I wasn't really sure what the point was and whether the Director's job was relevant to my interests. But he had very interesting things to say about how they're using new media (e.g. podcasts, youtube-like videos) to repurpose the content in their professional development workshops. Our discussion at the meeting was very stimulating and now I want to send him a follow-up email saying something along the lines of, "You're awesome, I heart technology, hire me plz".

This is where I realized how useful LinkedIn can be! Instead of attaching my resume to my follow-up email (unsolicited and a bit obnoxious), I can write a short and sweet email with a link to my [soon to be created] LinkedIn profile where I will have a virtual version of my resume. Thus, I will have accomplished the following:

  • sent a gracious and concise follow-up email
  • demonstrated my enthusiasm for technology :)
  • shown email etiquette by not including unsolicited attachments
  • expressed my desire to explore career opportunities with CS
Who knows if he'll reply or really look at my profile? But I don't think I'd lose anything by doing all that, right?

Anyway, going back to my original point - technology and social networks are cool IF you can find a purpose for them! I thought LinkedIn would be something of interest to you guys, and I hope this gives an idea of how you could possible take advantage of it.
